ERIC - History of Driver Education in the United States, 1966

History of Driver Education in the United States.

Stack, Herbert J.

The document contains a comprehensive historical review of the field of driver education, now called driver and traffic safety education, which has been taught in the public schools for more than 30 years. The first of eight chapters traces the early history of safety education from colonial times through the 1940's, including the beginnings of driver education in the mid-1930's. Chapter 2 focuses on contributions to the growth and development of driver and traffic safety education up to 1965 when more than 13,000 schools were giving this type of instruction to over 1,700,000 students. Teacher preparation and certification are discussed in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 presents the local organization, administration, and supervision of driver education programs which led to the development of State-level policies. The remaining chapters deal with measuring student progress (through knowledge and skill tests, driver attitudes, psychophysical testing, and comparative studies), research, support organizations, and the future outlook (from a 1966 perspective). Appended are a list of high school textbooks, and founding dates of 44 State Driver and/or Safety Education Associations. A 152-item bibliography (with a notation that many of the references are out of print) concludes the document. (Author/MS)

Java Custom Exception handling with Object and Driver class - Stack Overflow

I am having trouble with my custom book exception to interact with my program that creates a book object and for that too finally interact with my driver class Bookstore.java. My driver class doesn't catch the inconsistencies from happening. Like:

  • title should not be blank or contain blanks only
  • isbn should be a number between 1000 and 10000 (inclusive)
  • quantity should not be negative (zero is ok, it means out of stock)

When I run my driver class BookStore.java, it does not catch the above errors that I have written in book.java.

I would really appreciate the help and tips!

Murat.K already provided an answer that I am not going to repeat.

I am however going to give some some extra advice. First of all, Java already has an exception that deals with illegal / invalid arguments, and that's called IllegalArgumentException. You should really use it and not create your own exception that's supposed to be doing the same thing. Also, note that IllegalArgumentException is an unchecked exception. meaning you don't need a throws IllegalArgumentException in the method signature or in a catch block (unless you want to catch it).

If you still want to use your own exception, there's no need for the message field and its setter and getter, because the parent Exception class already has them (well, except for the setter, but it's not needed, as you set the message in the constructor anyway). So your class should look like this

And you can throw it on one line like

Maggie Gee (novelist) - Wikipedia, Photos and Videos

WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE

Maggie Mary Gee OBE FRSL (born 1948) is an English novelist. In 2012, she became a Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University .

Gee was one of six women among the 20 writers on the Granta Best of Young British Novelists list in 1983, which she recalls as "a very good time for fiction." [1] She was the first female Chair of the Royal Society of Literature (RSL), 2004–08. [2]

Contents Life [ edit ]

Gee was born in Poole, Dorset. As a child, she lived in the Midlands before moving to Sussex. She was educated at state schools, won a scholarship to Somerville College, Oxford and did an MA in English literature and an MLitt on Surrealism in England. After university she worked in publishing for two years and then became a research assistant at Wolverhampton Polytechnic where she completed a Ph.D. in The Self-Conscious Novel from Sterne to Vonnegut. She was one of the original Granta 20 Best of Young British Novelists. [2]

She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL). Her teaching specialty is 20th and 21st-century fiction. [2]

Gee lives in London with her husband, the writer and broadcaster Nicholas Rankin (author of Dead Man's Chest: Travels after Robert Louis Stevenson . Telegram from Guernica. The Extraordinary Life of George Steer. War Correspondent and Churchill's Wizards ), and their daughter.

Work [ edit ]

Gee has published twelve novels – most recently Virginia Woolf in Manhattan in 2014 – a collection of short stories, and a memoir. Her seventh novel, The White Family . was shortlisted for the 2003 Orange Prize and the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. [3] The first book-length study of her work, Mine Özyurt Kılıç's Maggie Gee: Writing the Condition-of-England Novel. was published in 2013. [4]

Gee writes in a broadly modernist tradition, in that her books have a strong overall sense of pattern and meaning, but her writing style is characterized by political and social awareness. She turns a satirical eye on contemporary society but is affectionate towards her characters and has an unironic sense of the beauty of the natural world. Her human beings are biological as well as social creatures partly because of the influence of science and in particular evolutionary biology on her thinking. Where Are the Snows (first published in 1991), The Ice People (1998) and The Flood (2004) have all dealt with the near or distant future. She writes through male characters as often as she does through female characters. [3]

The individual human concerns that her stories address include the difficulties of resolving the conflict between total unselfishness, which often leads to secret unhappiness and resentment against the beneficiaries; and selfishness, which in turn can lead to the unhappiness of others, particularly of children. This is a typical quandary of late 20th- and early 21st-century women, but it is also a concern for privileged, wealthy, long-lived western human beings as a whole, and widens into global concerns about wealth, poverty, and climate change. Her books also explore how humans as a species relate to non-human animals and to the natural world as a whole. Two of her books, The White Family (2002) and My Cleaner (2005), have racism as a central theme, dealt with as a tragedy in The White Family but as a comedy in My Cleaner. In 2009 she published My Driver . a second novel with many of the same characters as My Cleaner. but this time set in Uganda during a time of tension with neighboring DR Congo. [3]

Gee is a Vice-President of the Royal Society of Literature and Professor of Creative Writing at Bath Spa University. [5] She has also served on the Society of Authors ' management committee and the government's Public Lending Right committee. [3]

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of local and frequently updated information about adverse weather and road conditions on driver behaviour. The information was transmitted by several types of variable message signs (VMS). Two evaluations investigated the effects of VMS systems involving an individual sign or two signs; two other evaluations focused on more extensive VMS systems involving several signs, and two evaluations studied the effects of the sign technology. The slippery road condition sign and minimum headway sign decreased the mean speed of cars travelling in free-flow traffic by 1-2 km/h. The minimum headway sign also decreased the proportion of short headways. In addition, drivers' reports suggested that these variable message signs have other effects on driver behaviour, such as the refocusing of attention to seek cues on potential hazards, testing the slipperiness of the road, and more careful passing behaviour. Lowering the speed limit from 100 km/h to 80 km/h on a weather-controlled road decreased the mean speed by an average of 3.4 km/h in winter. The system proved most effective when adverse weather and road conditions were not easy to detect. The system also decreased the standard deviation of speed. Most drivers accepted lowered speed limits and found variable speed limits useful. Variable speed limit signs using fibre-optic technology were found to be more effective than electromechanical signs. However, effective signs may divert the driver's attention from adjacent fixed signing. The slippery road condition sign is recommended for careful use at critical spots, whereas a system including variable speed limits is recommended for somewhat longer road sections. The use of fibre-optic signs is recommended for weather-controlled applications.

This thesis consists of an overview and of the following 6 publications:
