Ocasys: Toon vak Dependence & Extremes in Risk Management

Dependence & Extremes in Risk Management

Upon completion of the course the student is able to:
1. Recommend, justify, and appraise models in modern quantitative risk management.
2. Use the scientific literature in actuarial science and risk management to justify choices when applying such models.
3. Evaluate properties of estimators in simple settings
4. Apply these risk models to simple cases
5. Write and present a report on a case study in modeling of risk, and to discuss the results of and with their peers.
6. Appreciate the restrictions of the (multivariate) normal distribution, and able to propose alternatives.

The normal distribution is the one most used in theoretical and practical work, because of its tractability. However, it imposes strong restrictions on extremes, and dependence (in the context of multivariate random variables). In this course, we explore alternatives to the distribution, and argue that modern risk management should be focusing on tail behaviour. Also, we treat an alternative way to model dependence between random variables: by specifying the marginal distributions and the dependence structure separately, using copula's. Even though models in risk management provide the leading examples, the methods are widely applicable.

Pirates and Privateers - Those in Peril

Books for Adults - Fiction

Hector Cross, owner of Cross Bow Security Limited, is in charge of security for Bannock Oil. The moment he meets the CEO a gorgeous woman with brains who inherited the company from her husband sparks fly. Hazel Bannock makes no attempt to hide her dislike and disdain for the man in charge of safeguarding her companys installations and personnel. But Hector is adept at his job and no one does it better.

Cayla Bannock, Hazels cherished but spoiled teenage daughter, is aboard the family yacht awaiting her mothers return from a business trip to their Middle Eastern oil fields. Shes supposed to be studying, but spends most of her time dallying with one of the crew, Rogier. While Cayla believes hes a university student like herself, his purpose for being with her is far different.

Rogier is actually Adam Tippoo Tip, grandson of Hadji Sheikh Mohammed Khan Tippoo Tip, who commands a group of pirates that attacks ships north of Madagascar. Adam secretly sends coordinates to his uncle disclosing where the pirates can attack the yacht. The plan is to kidnap and torture Cayla until her mother meets their demands.

Hazel seeks help from high government contacts, but when they are unable or unwilling to get involved, she must turn to the only man who has a chance of rescuing her daughter Hector Cross. Unbeknownst to them both, this is just what the pirates want. Cayla is merely bait to get their hands on Hazel and put an end to their blood feud with Hector.

Those in Perilis a fast-paced, heart-stopping tale filled with lurid sex, edge-of-your-seat thrills, and characters that draw you into the danger and intrigue of their world. The beginning of the book is filled with thrilling action that rarely allows you to breathe. The middle portion, however, is so sedate it lures you into a false sense of security. Then the action picks up again like a roller coaster climbing to the top before plunging to the bottom. This book is not every readers cup of tea the torture that Cayla endures is explicit but its definitely an adventure you wont soon forget.

Waltzing With Bears: Managing Risk on Software Projects; ISBN

jancology.com Waltzing With Bears: Managing Risk on Software Projects; ISBN

Ok, after a bit less then a year I finished this book. I think that says enough. Walzing with bears is not the book for me. Although it gave a lot of insight about “how to handle and deal with risk early in the project” and that “ignoring risk is not an option”, it could not interest me till the end. Probably mainly because it do not use risk analyses in my day to day job. In the end the biggest reason I bought the book was because of the extremely funny title and I had good experience with other books of Tom DeMarco and Timothy Lister.

Those in Peril - Wikipedia, Photos and Videos

WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE

Those in Peril is a book by the author Wilbur Smith. The book focuses on the lives of billionaire Hazel Bannock, who is the owner of the Bannock Oil Corp and Major Hector Cross, an ex-SAS operative and the owner of a security company Cross Bow Security. This company has been contracted to protect Hazel Bannock and her business interest and the story unfolds when Hazel's daughter is hijacked by Somalian pirates .

Contents Background [ edit ]

Wilbur Smith says that when he submitted his manuscript to his publishers they thought it could make two novels, but he insisted on it being one. [1]

Smith described the novel as "another pretty tale of sex, violence and mayhem with a few belly laughs thrown in for good measure." [2]

Smith wanted to write a stand-alone book about a mother being deprived of her adored child, then having to get help from one of his tough guys. "I wanted her to be tough, too," he says, "because I'm a feminist." [3]

When he owned an island in the Seychelles. he and his crew once came across Somali pirates.

They didn't acknowledge us – rare among sailors – but I've never forgotten this guy, tall and very handsome, as hypnotic as a black mamba, just standing there. His eyes were dead. I guess I was lucky they weren't kidnapping that day; I could so easily have been taken, but that image has stayed with me. I knew I would use it one day. [Modern day pirates are ] using sophisticated radar equipment and offshore accounts. I think the disturbing thing about Somalia is the fact this is a country where there are few economic opportunities, so the pirates are seen as glamorous, and often held in awe by young boys who aspire to their lifestyle. [3]

Reception [ edit ]

In a review, Christopher Bray from the Express described the plot as fairly predictable, with some clichéd descriptions but also defies anyone who has picked it up to put it down as the story is exciting. [4]

The reviewer of Publishers Weekly said that "the author's vast legions of fans should embrace the lurid action, the larger-than-life characters, and the heated prose with their usual enthusiasm." [5]

The film rights for Those in Peril have been acquired by Reelart Media in 2012 but no film has resulted. [6]
