Biography

Puzo was born into a poor family from Pietradefusi. Province of Avellino. Campania. Italy living in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood of New York. [ 1 ] Many of his books draw heavily on this heritage. After graduating from the City College of New York. he joined the United States Army Air Forces in World War II. Due to his poor eyesight, the military did not let him undertake combat duties but made him a public relations officer stationed in Germany. In 1950, his first short story, The Last Christmas. was published in American Vanguard. After the war, he wrote his first book, The Dark Arena . which was published in 1955.

At periods in the 1950s and early 1960s, Puzo worked as a writer/editor for publisher Martin Goodman 's Magazine Management Company. Puzo, along with other writers like Bruce Jay Friedman. worked for the company line of men's magazines, pulp titles like Male. True Action. and Swank. Under the pseudonym Mario Cleri. Puzo wrote World War II adventure features for True Action. [ 2 ]

Puzo's most famous work, The Godfather . was first published in 1969 after he had heard anecdotes about Mafia organizations during his time in pulp journalism. He later said in an interview with Larry King that his principal motivation was to make money. He had already, after all, written two books that had received great reviews, yet had not amounted to much. As a government clerk with five children, he was looking to write something that would appeal to the masses. With a number one bestseller for months on the New York Times Best Seller List, Mario Puzo had found his target audience. The book was later developed into the film The Godfather . directed by Francis Ford Coppola. The movie received 11 Academy Award nominations, winning three, including an Oscar for Puzo for Best Adapted Screenplay. Coppola and Puzo collaborated then to work on sequels to the original film, The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III .

Puzo wrote the first draft of the script for the 1974 disaster film Earthquake , which he was unable to continue working on due to his commitment to The Godfather Part II . Puzo also co-wrote Richard Donner 's Superman and the original draft for Superman II . He also collaborated on the stories for the 1982 film A Time to Die and the 1984 Francis Ford Coppola film The Cotton Club .

Puzo never saw the publication of his penultimate book, Omertà . but the manuscript was finished before his death as was the manuscript for The Family . However, in a review originally published in the San Francisco Chronicle . Jules Siegel. who had worked closely with Puzo at Magazine Management Company, speculated that Omertà may have been completed by "some talentless hack." Siegel also acknowledges the temptation to "rationalize avoiding what is probably the correct analysis – that [Puzo] wrote it and it is terrible." [ 3 ]

Puzo died of heart failure on Friday, July 2, 1999 at his home in Bay Shore, Long Island. New York. His family now lives in East Islip, New York.

Influence of Dostoyevsky

Puzo's favourite writer was Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He was deeply influenced by his books, particularly The Karamazov Brothers that he quoted in his books: The Dark Arena, Fools Die, The Fourth K, and The Family. The character Stefano Andolini in The Sicilian was derived from Dostoyevsky's major character Stepan Trofimovich Verkhovensky in The Possessed. And Luca Brasi came from Raskolnikov. Puzo referred Dostoyevsky as his "personal favourite" to the editor Jonathan Karp. Although Balzac is said to have influenced Puzo, it was really Dostoyevsky who influenced Puzo the most. And Dostoyevsky was also a Balzac as he began his career by translating Balzac's Eugénie Grandet in 1843.

Sicilian Mafia

Sicilian Mafia Rivals

The Sicilian Mafia. also known as Cosa Nostra ("our thing"), is a criminal syndicate in Sicily. Italy. It is a loose association of criminal groups that share a common organisational structure and code of conduct. The basic group is known as a "family", "clan", or "cosca " or "cosche" in Sicilian. [1] Each family claims sovereignty over a territory, usually a town or village or a neighbourhood (borgata ) of a larger city, in which it operates its rackets. Its members call themselves "men of honour", although the public often refers to them as "mafiosi". The Mafia 's core activities are protection racketeering. the arbitration of disputes between criminals, and the organizing and oversight of illegal agreements and transactions.

Following waves of emigration, the Mafia has spread to other countries such as the United States, Canada, and Australia.

Contents Etymology Edit

The word "mafia" originated in Sicily, though its origins are uncertain. The Sicilian adjective mafiusu (in Italian: mafioso ) roughly translates to mean "swagger ," but can also be translated as "boldness, bravado ". In reference to a man, mafiusu in 19th century Sicily was ambiguous, signifying a bully, arrogant but also fearless, enterprising and proud, according to scholar Diego Gambetta. [2] In reference to a woman, however, the feminine-form adjective "mafiusa" means beautiful and attractive. The Sicilian word mafie refers to the caves near Trapani and Marsala, which were often used as hiding places for refugees and criminals.

Sicily was once an Islamic emirate, therefore "mafia" might have Arabic roots. Possible Arabic roots of the word include:

  • mahyas (مهياص) = aggressive boasting, bragging
  • marfud (مرفوض) = rejected
  • mu'afa = safety, protection [3]
  • Ma àfir = the name of an Arab tribe [4] that ruled Palermo [5]

The public's association of the word with the criminal secret society was perhaps inspired by the 1863 play "I mafiusi di la Vicaria" ("The Mafiosi of the Vicaria") by Giuseppe Rizzotto and Gaetano Mosca. The words Mafia and mafiusi are never mentioned in the play; they were probably put in the title to add a local flair. The play is about a Palermo prison gang with traits similar to the Mafia: a boss, an initiation ritual, and talk of "umirtà" (omertà or code of silence) and "pizzu " (a codeword for extortion money). [6] The play had great success throughout Italy. Soon after, the use of the term "mafia" began appearing in the Italian state's early reports on the phenomenon. The word made its first official appearance in 1865 in a report by the prefect of Palermo Filippo Antonio Gualterio. [7]

The term "mafia" has become a generic term for any organized criminal network with similar structure, methods, and interests. Giovanni Falcone. the anti-Mafia judge murdered by the Mafia in 1992, however, objected to the conflation of the term "Mafia" with organized crime in general:

"Cosa Nostra" and other names Edit

According to Mafia turncoats (pentiti), the real name of the Mafia is "Cosa Nostra" ("Our Thing"). Italian-American mafioso Joseph Valachi testified before the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations of the U.S. Senate Committee on Government Operations in 1963 (known as the Valachi hearings). He revealed that American mafiosi referred to their organization by the term cosa nostra ("our thing" or "this thing of ours" or simply "our cause" / "our interest").

At the time, it was understood as a proper name, fostered by the FBI and disseminated by the media. The FBI even added the article la to the term, calling it La Cosa Nostra (in Italy, the article la is not used when referring to Cosa Nostra).

In 1984, Mafia turncoat Tommaso Buscetta revealed to anti-mafia magistrate Giovanni Falcone that the term was used by the Sicilian Mafia, as well. Buscetta dismissed the word "mafia" as a mere literary creation. Other defectors such as Antonino Calderone and Salvatore Contorno confirmed the use of Cosa Nostra to describe the Mafia. Mafiosi introduce known members to each other as belonging to cosa nostra ("our thing") or la stessa cosa ("the same thing"), meaning "he is the same thing as you — a Mafioso."

The Sicilian Mafia has used other names to describe itself throughout its history, such as "The Honoured Society". Mafiosi are known among themselves as "men of honour" or "men of respect".

Cosa Nostra should not be confused with other mafia-type organisations in Italy, such as the 'Ndrangheta in Calabria, the Camorra in Campania, or the Sacra Corona Unita in Apulia.

The Last Godfathers

THE LAST GODFATHERS charts the spectacular rise and fall of the richest and most powerful crime family in history: the Sicilian mafia’s Corleonese clan.
From humble post-war origins in the dismal town of Corleone, the clan manipulated Cosa Nostra’s code of honour to deceive and bludgeon its way to the summit of the secret brotherhood, launching an unprecedented purge of its rivals and a terrorist campaign which decimated anti-mafia judges, police and politicians.
Investigative journalist John Follain focuses on the three godfathers who headed the clan from the 1950s onwards – their lives and crimes, their loves and hates, and the state’s sporadic efforts to hunt them. Luciano ‘The Professor’ Leggio, Salvatore ‘The Beast’ Riina and Bernardo ‘The Tractor’ Provenzano, who was on the run for a record 43 years, forged a vicious clan bent on the subversion of democracy.
Cutting through the romantic aura of Hollywood films, THE LAST GODFATHERS portrays the true face of the crime family which inspired Mario Puzo to write The Godfather. Based on thousands of pages of judicial documents, wiretap transcripts, the testimony of mafiosi defectors and interviews with investigators, this is the definitive word on the world’s most notorious criminal organisation.

Editorial Reviews

Because of The Godfather books and films, the name Corleone is well known worldwide. Follain (Jackal: The Complete Story of the Legendary Terrorist ), the Rome correspondent for the Sunday Times. introduces readers to the real Corleone family of Sicily, chronicling their origins, their rise to power, and their eventual downfall, caused by their own vicious vendettas and the unending courage of the prosecutors who braved their wrath. Don Michele Navarra, who became boss of the family in the 1940s, began as part of the criminal Fratuzzi ("brothers"), and his viciousness and cunning allowed him to make his clan the undisputed masters of the area. From there, they spread throughout Italy, inspiring loyalty and terror by eliminating both rivals and the law enforcement officers sent to bring them down. Eventually, they went too far, and "supergrasses" (informants) began breaking the code of silence. When even the big bosses began flipping, it was over for the clan, though the Mafia continues to have a strong influence in Italy. VERDICT An intriguing look at the Italian Mafia in the last century. True crime fans and Mafia buffs will enjoy.—Deirdre Bray Root, Middletown P.L. OH

The Godfather

The Godfather

The WWE Hall of Fame now has its Godfather.

Remembered most to WWE audiences as a fun-loving staple of the Attitude Era, The Godfather’s journey to the Hall of Fame was certainly one wild train ride.

In the late ‘90s he was most recognizable for being the muscle of The Nation of Domination, but as that group began to slowly disband, The Godfather seemingly began to have more and more women accompany him to ringside every week.

This trend continued after The Nation officially split and The Godfather quickly transitioned into one of the WWE Universe’s most beloved Superstars, both for his attractive supporting cast and for his enigmatic charisma and charm.

The Godfather would go on to capture both the Intercontinental Championship and the WWE Tag Team Championship. He also, for a brief period of time along the Right to Censor, would shun his upbeat, often raunchy persona to become The Good Father. This metamorphosis would not last for long, however, and The Godfather (and his train of ladies) would return in the 2002 Royal Rumble Match in spectacular fashion.

Even today, The Godfather and his never-ending supply of beautiful women still pop up on WWE television from time-to-time. It may be infrequent, but when it does happen, one thing is certain, the WWE Universe gleefully cheers, “All aboard!”
