Scuola Grande di San Marco

Scuola Grande di San Marco

The Scuola Grande of San Marco.

The Scuola Grande di San Marco is a building in Venice. Italy. It originally was the home to one of the six major sodalities or Scuole Grandi of Venice. It faces the Campo San Giovanni e Paolo. one of the largest squares in the city.

The edifice was built by the Confraternity of San Marco in 1260 to act as its seat. In 1485, however, it was destroyed by a large fire, and rebuilt in the following twenty years under a new design by Pietro Lombardo. with a fund established by the members. The façade, a masterwork with delicately decorated niches and pilasters, and with white or polychrome marble statues, was later completed by Mauro Codussi. While decorated with the polished marble elements of Renaissance classicism, the proliferation of arches and niches adds a retrogressive Byzantine flavor, an architectural feature of many conservative Venetian styles.

Three of the greatest Italian explorers of the fifteenth century: Giosafat Barbaro. Ambrogio Contarini. and Alvise da Mosto were members of the Scuola. [1]

Jacopo Tintoretto furnished the Scuola with three paintings Miracle of the Slave (also known as The Miracle of St. Mark . 1548), St Mark's Body Brought to Venice. painted between 1562 an 1566, both paintings are currently housed in the Gallerie dell'Accademia in Venice. northern Italy, and Finding of the body of St Mark also painted between 1562 an 1566, an now held in the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan .

In 1819 it became an Austrian military hospital. It is now a civil hospital.

Venice today is a beautiful city in the venetian lagoon, and it’s made by isles joined together by several bridges,it’s one of the biggest port in the Mediterranean Sea.It’s an open air museum.

    THE VENETIAN LAGOON

    • The history of the lagoon of Venice begins about 6.000 years ago, when the elevation of the sea after the last freezing reached the highest levels.
  • The lagoon is usually divided into three parts:

  • upper lagoon: developing northward from the port of Piave Vecchia to port opening the mouth of S. Nicolò;

  • middle lagoon: from port of Lido to port opening of Malamocco;

  • lower lagoon: southward, that goes from the port of Malamocco to the port opening of Chioggia

THE LAGOON AND THE LAGOONARY ATMOSPHERE

The lagoon is a coastal water basin that starts as a result of a cord shoreline that closes on a bay or a marine gulf leaving them in communication with the sea. The river basin is formed by a stretch of water islands and sandbanks divided by channels. The lagoons can change their caratteristics according to climate, new urban areas, sea erosion, and tides

    • The "bocche di porto" are cross in the litoraneo cord through which waters of the lagoon are in continuous relationship with those of the sea, that is the water move perennally towards the sea or from the sea, fundamental phenomen for the life in the lagoons. The waters have a high saltness and their depth can vary from 4 to 18 meters. The three "bocche di porto" of Venice are:
  • bocca di porto of Lido

  • bocca di porto of Malamocco

  • bocca di porto of Chioggia

The Lidi are long tightened sandy islands formed by sand dunes that separate the lagoon from the sea. In some zones winds are wave motion the sand gather widening the shore were more dunes rise while elsewhere there is lack of sand and dunes themselves.

The shoal represents a flat territory that generally emerges of few centimeters comared to the medium level of tides.

In some central deppressing zones, i chiari di barene, it many happen salty water stognation. Consequently there is a great chloride concentration due to evaporation and a lowering of the ground for sediment concentration

The “velme” are small muddy channels that transport nourishing substances to the flora and the fauna of shoals and emerge alone during the periods of low tide.

The “valli da pesca” of the veneta lagoon are constituted by stretch of water that comes surrondend by banks and earth dikes with of particular structures (the chiaviche), that allow to control the exchange, excluding at same the valle, from ebb and flow of the tide.
