ERIC - Corpora in Language Teaching and Learning: Potential, Evaluation, Challenges

    Breyer, Yvonne Alexandra

    Peter Lang Frankfurt

This book highlights the potential and the challenges of corpora in language education with a particular focus on the teacher's perspective. For this purpose, the study explores the relevance of the corpus approach to central paradigms underlying contemporary language education. Furthermore, a critical analysis investigates the persisting gap between research findings and their implementation in teaching practices. As a result, key factors in advancing the popularisation of corpora in language education are identified. A survey and a case study verify this gap and, importantly, underline the pivotal role of adequate teacher education if corpus-based language teaching is to make any significant impact on current teaching practices. The table of contents includes the following: (1) Corpus linguistics; (2) Corpora in language education; (3) Language awareness; (4) Learner autonomy; (5) Authenticity; (6) Data-driven learning; (7) Popularisation of corpora; (8) Language teacher education; and (9) Concordancing software. A survey, and questionnaire are also included.

    Language corpora

    Language corpora

A corpus is a collection of written or spoken texts. With the use of computers it is possible to compile large amounts of authentic written and spoken language. This compilation of online text can then be analysed in various ways to establish patterns of grammar and vocabulary usage. The usual computer programming tool to perform the language analysis is called a concordancer. The corpora (or corpuses) listed below permit the use of an online concordancer to investigate the text they contain.

The British National Corpus (BNC) is a 100 million word collection of samples of written and spoken language from a wide range of sources, designed to represent a wide cross-section of current British English, both spoken and written. (Summary information copied from the BNC homepage.)

Michigan Corpus of Academic Spoken English, containing more than 160 transcripts with over 2 million wods of text.

Ths corpus contains more than 56 millions words of text. The link to the left opens a demonstration concordancer for direct access to the corpus database.

This website allows you to quickly and easily search more than 100 million words of text of American English from 1923 to the present, as found in TIME magazine. (Summary information copied from the corpus website.)

    For release in late 2007

This is a very simple concordancer (on this website) that allows you to analyse texts that you have compiled yourself.

These two links contain useful information about corpora and how to use them, with many practical examples.

    Tony McEnery

Professor Tony McEnery FAcSS, FRSA Career Details

I am currently Director of the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science and Distinguished Professor of English Language and Linguistics at Lancaster University.

I was Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Lancaster University, from 2008-2014.

I was Director of Research at the Arts and Humanities Research Council from 2005-2008.

I was Head of Department of the Department of Linguistics and English Language, Lancaster University, from 2000-2005.

    Research Overview

I direct the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science, which was awarded a Queen's Anniversary Prize for its research in 2015.

I undertake research using corpus linguistics in a range of areas across theoretical and applied linguistics. As well as undertaking 'blue skies' research, I have also done applied work with a range of partner organizations in the public sector (e.g. the Department of Culture Media and Sport, the Environment Agency and the Home Office) and the private sector (e.g. with British Telecom, IBM, Nokia and Research in Motion). I have worked on projects in a wide range of languages, including Arabic, Chinese, French, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish. I have also constructed many corpora including the CRATER and EMILLE corpora. The latter remains the largest and most comprehensive collection of written and spoken corpus materials for South Asian languages.

    Research Grants

I have received research funding to date of £7,296,714. This has been gained from a wide range of funders including the AHRB, ESRC, NERC, EPSRC, the Leverhulme Trust, the Newby Trust and the European Union. My current research grants are:

    • I am principal investigator of the Lancaster component of the NERC funded project Analysis of historic drought and water scarcity in the UK: a systems-based study of drivers and impacts (with the NERC Centre for Ecology and Hydrology)
    • I am principal investigator of the Newby Trust funded project Newspapers, poverty and long-term change. A corpus analysis of five centuries of text
    • I am principal investigator of the joint Trinity/ESRC funded project Trinity Learner Corpus
    • I am principal investigator of the ESRC Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science
    • I am co-investigator on the Newton grant Big data media analysis and the representation of urban violence in Brasil (Prof. Elena Semino is the principal investigator)
    Research Interests

I am interested principally in the application of corpus methods to a range of questions relating to language in linguistics and beyond. This included topics which touch upon the theoretical core of linguistics, such as theories of aspect, but I look more at issues in applied linguistics such as the representation of Muslims and Islam in the UK Press. I am interested in language as a socially situated phenomenon and have pursued social explanations of langauge use, most notably through my work looking at swearing in English. My commitment to exploring the interaction between langauge and society stretches beyond the here and now - much of my work in this area is rooted in historical exploration. Such explorations are being enabled by the production of large new corpora covering early modern to present day English. I am very happy to be actively involved in the production of such corpora, and other datasets relevant to my research, especially the BNC2014 which is a current focus of effort for me.

    Current Teaching

Though I am currently devoting much of my time to research, I am still active in teaching. Each summer I teach on a summer school in corpus linguistics at Lancaster University. I also run a MOOC on the Futurelearn platform, through which I have introduced corpus linguistics to tens of thousands of people. In addition, I supervise postgraduate students at both Masters and PhD levels.

    Professional Role

I am a Fellow both of the Academy of Social Sciences and of the Royal Society of Arts.

I am a member of the Audit Committee of the Academy of Social Sciences,

    External Roles

I am a member of the Council of the University of Chester.

I have held the following visiting positions:

    • 2015-2020 International Advisor, China Multilingual and Multimodal Corpora and Big Data Centre, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and Beijing University of Foreign Studies
    • 2010-2012 Visiting Professor, University of Limerick
    • 2003 Visiting Professor, Beijing Foreign Studies University
    • 1999 Visiting Professor, Chemnitz University, Germany
    • 1997 Visiting Professor, Tohoku State University, Japan
    • 1991 Visiting Lecturer, Aberystwyth University
    • 1990 Visiting Lecturer, Liverpool University
    Additional Information

I was awarded the Odzmacsewie Universyteti Łódźkiego (Jubilee Medal) by the University of Łódź in in 1999 for an outstanding contribution to the intellectual life of the University.

Corpus-Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing

Corpus-Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing

Corpus-based methods will be found at the heart of many language and speech processing systems. This book provides an in-depth introduction to these technologies through chapters describing basic statistical modeling techniques for language and speech, the use of Hidden Markov Models in continuous speech recognition, the development of dialogue systems, part-of-speech tagging and partial parsing, data-oriented parsing and n-gram language modeling.
The book attempts to give both a clear overview of the main technologies used in language and speech processing, along with sufficient mathematics to understand the underlying principles. There is also an extensive bibliography to enable topics of interest to be pursued further. Overall, we believe that the book will give newcomers a solid introduction to the field and it will give existing practitioners a concise review of the principal technologies used in state-of-the-art language and speech processing systems.
Corpus-Based Methods in Language and Speech Processing is an initiative of ELSNET, the European Network in Language and Speech. In its activities, ELSNET attaches great importance to the integration of language and speech, both in research and in education. The need for and the potential of this integration are well demonstrated by this publication.

Corpus-aided language pedagogy is one of the central application areas of corpus methodologies, and a test bed for theories of language and learning. This volume provides an overview of current trends, offering methodological and theoretical position statements along with results from empirical studies. The relationship between corpora and learning is examined from complementary perspectives the study of learner language, the didactic use of corpus findings, and the interaction between corpora and their users. Reflections on current theory and technology open and close the volume. With its focus on the learner and the learning setting, Corpora and Language Learners is addressed to corpus linguists with an interest in learner language, applied linguists wishing to expand their understanding of corpora and their pedagogic potential, and language teachers wishing to critically assess the relevance of work in this field. This volume grew out of selected presentations at the 5th Teaching and Language Corpora conference in Bertinoro, Italy.
