Liber Kaos: The Psychonomicon

Liber Kaos: The Psychonomicon

von Peter Carroll

The Scriptures of Chaos
This book consists of 3 parts. The first, Liber Kaos proper, deals with the principles of magic, aeonics and the principles of chaos. It includes Pope Pete's fascinating psychohistory model in which the shamanic, religious, rationalist and pandemonic aeons are measured against the materialistic, magical and transcendental paradigms to illustrate the historical ups and downs of the spiritual worldview. Part two: The Psychonomicon, discusses practical magic, sleight of mind, auric and different types of color magic, from octarine to purple. It also includes the Thanateros ritual, which is a celebration of Chaoist principles and a momentary invocation of the power of chaos itself. The appendices make up the third part of the book and includes Liber KKK: an extended series of magical operations; the Gnostic pentagram ritual; chaos monasticism, and; Liber Pactionis: the structure, rituals and protocols of the magical pact of the illuminates of Thanateros. The text is enhanced by diagrams and two illustrations, and there is a short bibliography which includes Stephen Hawking and Terry Pratchet. Pope Pete certainly provides a compelling read, but I'm not convinced of his premises. As another reviewer has said, chaos only occurs in a localized context. Certain patterns in the universe, like the platonic solids and sacred geometry (the golden mean) seem to indicate the prevalence of order in the larger scheme of things. Call me a heretic or Reform Chaoist if you will, but I don't believe Pope Pete is infallible!

Essential Work on Magickal Theory
Although I do NOT agree with many of the author's views, he has presented one of the clearest and most workable systems of self-development available. His system works from the sorcery to the high levels of magick in a self paced manner that is the best around. He has stripped magick of many useless ideas and theories while leaving in the elements that make it work. Very important reading even if you don't embrace this magickal world view.

Essential For The Serious Student
Less than 3% of all books on magic are worth reading. LIBER KAOS is one of them. The first part of the book attempts to explain magick in terms of quantum physics and chaos theory(interesting. that's all I can say). The second part of the book however, cuts straight to the nitty gritty of how to do magick properly to get results. Step by step procedure stripped of all religious, supersticious, and cultural symbolism and baggage. If you do not study these principles and use them you are shooting yourself in the foot.

Liber Kaos

Liber Kaos

Liber Kaos is a book by Peter J. Carroll about Kaos Magick. which details an advanced magickal training course.

There are actually two parts to Liber Kaos. The first is called "Liber Kaos" while the second part is titled "The Psychonomicon." The book also has some appendices, of additional material. The book, in the first part, describes something it calls Quantum Metaphysics. as well as describing Chaos Magic Theory. This is really the understanding that quantum mechanics and fractal chaos are important when combined, and that the "attractor" in chaos theory is the same principle which causes quanta to arrange the way they do (though, the book doesn't say this). The book adds a dimension of mathematics and science to the practice of magick.

The book also describes the cycling of the aeons (as the idea "Aeonics") and how things will undoubtedly return to Kaos. (see also The Five Stages of Chaos ) Magick cannot be supressed indefinitely, and for life to flow, so must the ages flow, and Carroll postulates in his book a "psychohistoric mechanism of the Aeons", where beliefs in different times may move through different stages, and that a "Pandemon" aeon will soon appear, based on Chaoist beliefs.

Also explained, to some degree, are the eight magicks (which is in a sense related to the eight major sects of Miriad ). These eight magicks are described as different colors of magick. Octarine, or Pure magick, is the drive towards magick, but in essence it is the understanding of the other 7 magicks. Black magick, which is the principle of death magick, is close to what may be termed Entropy magick.

I like his move of trying to justify CMT on grounds of theoretical physics-- his math is woefully underdone here, but the math on his website carries onward where this book fails.

Such mixed feelings about this one!

As one approaching graduation with an Engineering degree, I expected to be most offput by the quantum physics, but while questionable at least it isn't egregiously stupid; relativity is not confused with quantum mechanics, nor is the ins. Read full review

Recommends it for: any serious student of magick

This book is in parts truly excellent - and should be essential reading for students of the 'arte magickal'. The descriptions of mechanism and process are outstanding - although they will appeal most to people with a physics / maths inclination.

An excellent description of Chaos Theory used as a magical theory. It was really refreshing to read this after reading so many of the heavy handed magical/mystical theories out there. And this stuff works.

When I read it, it blew my mind. I've read a lot since tho, so it's hard to remember my first impression. There's not enough out there about mathemagics tho, so I think it still holds it's place as an important read.

I remember when this book came out it was like the hottest thing out there. As far as Chaos Magic goes this is one of the essential books to have on the shelf. It gives theory, philosophy and practices that are essential for the practitioner.

One of the best technical manuals on magick yet created. Carroll is one of the minds behind the rise of Chaos Magick. This book is a refreshing dose out of the standard mythic embedded occult offerings.

One of the first books on magic that didn't talk down to me, and also didn't use a great deal of flowery language. It inspired me to analyze my perspectives, and begin practice again.

The work programme you are required to do for a minimum of six months includes:

  • Banishing Rituals: master a couple of these - e.g. Gnostic Pentagram & IAO.
  • Dreamwork: keep a record of your dreams and suggest interpretations.
  • Metamorphosis: self-transforming magic deliberately undertaken.
  • Asana: sitting still, practice this on its own then within other work.
  • Pranayama: breath control - practice this on its own and in asana, as part of motionless-no-thought exercise, 30 minutes minimum daily.
  • Sigils, Mantras: learn how to create and use these.
  • Divination: develop and record divination skills - e.g. Tarot spreads, etc.
  • Any spells, rituals, or talismans done: keep a record of how & why you did these.
  • Image Concentration: visualisation of images in the mind's eye to gain trance.
  • Object Concentration: staring at objects, e.g. wall, clouds, in order to gain trance.
  • Sound Concentration: repetition of mantras or meaningless phrases to assist trance.

All Liber MMM work is to be recorded in a diary with your own comments and self-assessment. You may choose to keep your MMM diary separate from your more personal records. A suggested diary layout would include:

It is suggested that the first time you do new work - e.g. a Banishing Rite - you write it up fully- thereafter shorter comments can be used e.g. 'Gnostic pentagram becoming more fluent now'.

Mentor and Novice

Please note: we do not chase Novices up; we are only interested in highly motivated people. It is up to you to stay in regular contact with your Mentor. If we do not hear from you for a while, we assume that you are not currently interested in being a Novice. This does not mean that the door is closed, but it is up to you to make the effort to get back in touch if you do wish to continue.
